This trip lets you see every chapter in this book, starting in the south. Ferries are used when possible, supplanted by planes. Don't have the time or cash for this mammoth adventure? Cut off a chunk and do just that part. A full tour could take from three weeks to one month.
Start in the resorts of Aruba, then fly to Curacao for old Willemstad and then to Bonaire for diving. Now it's a flight to Port of Spain, Trinidad, followed by a ferry trip to the natural beauty of Tobago. From here fly to lovely beaches and even better surfing in Barbados, then take a flight to surprising Grenada. Here you can take boats (ferries and mail boats) island hopping up through St Vincent and the Grenadines. Don't miss Bequia.
A quick flight to St Lucia and you are again island hopping. Going north, make the ferry voyages to tres Francaise Martinique and on to the waterfalls and wilds of Dominica and then the twin cones of Guadeloupe. You are back on a plane to Antigua, from where you can take a boat round-trip to beautiful Barbuda before making the 20-minute flights round-trip for plucky Montserrat and its active volcano.
Leave the Antigua hub by plane for Nevis, followed by a chance to get spray in your face on a ferry to the volcanic perfection of St Kitts. From here it's 30 minutes by air to the transport hub of St-Martin/Sint Maarten, with its awesome runway beach and bar.
Do round-trip ferry visits to upscale Anguilla, tiny Saba, very French St-Barthelemy and volcanic Sint Eustatius and its ruins. Now fly to St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and escape by boat to lovely St Croix. Get a ferry to the British Virgin Islands and then a flight to Puerto Rico and beautiful Old San Juan. Fly to the Dominican Republic and then go for a bus adventure to Haiti (or fly). Another plane takes you to the Turks and Caicos where you can continue by air to reggae-licious Jamaica. Fly to the Cayman Islands, stroke a stingray, and continue on to amazing, intoxicating and confounding Cuba. From here it is a short flight from Havana across to Nassau in the Bahamas, where you can lose yourself amid hundreds of islands.
